Speak Softly and Carry a Big Stick†. Theodore Roosevelt was a man of legacy, he truly redefined the American Nation. Teddy Roosevelt was forty-three years old when he took the office of Presidency, making him the youngest president in U.S. History. To many, he was the first modern day president. Roosevelt truly expanded the power of the presidency dramatically with his Square Deal, and Foreign Policy. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was born on October 27, 1858 in New York City to an affluent family. Due to his chronic illness he was homeschooled, but compensated through strenuous exercise. Teddy graduated from Harvard in 1880, studied at Columbia Law School and married Alice Hathaway Lee. He then strengthened the U.S. Navy, completed the Panama Canal, and received the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 190 6. President Roosevelt announced the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine; that the United States could intervene in the affairs of Central and South American countries. Roosevelt would often say, the government needed to â€Å"Speak softly, and carry a big stick† which meant the threat of force in order to make sure things worked well in terms of foreign policy. Theodore was known for always being in motion, he was always doing something and had a tremendous amount energy. He was the first president known for bringing his children into the White House, and interrupting affairs to play with the children. Teddy Roosevelt was one of the founders of the Modern Environmental Movement. Due to him, over two-hundred acres of land is still wilderness today. This land was used for, National Parks, National Monuments. Roosevelt left office in 1909, and went on a safari in Africa for two years. Upon his return, unhappy with President Taft, the man he had groomed for the office; Ro osevelt ran against him in 1912 forming a third political party to do so.
